Front Yard Landscaping: Improving Your Home’s Image

The landscaping designs for the front yard have a different purpose than those for the backyard. Front yards typically follow the primary intention of accessibility. Additionally, the front yard is also the first part of the property visitors will see and this usually provides them with their first impression. Front yards are where both the residents and guests enter and leave homes, though most often spend very little time at. Basically, front yard landscaping starts with designing a walkway or a driveway and the entire scheme will be based and created around that.

Making a Wonderful Front Yard

Planting the front yard mainly depends on your house. It is important that all the fences, walkways, driveways, plants and other items around the house complement it. The trees and shrubs have the capability to unite the house with its surrounding by making the building seem a natural part of the terrain and softening the vertical lines.

There are two major areas around the house that need special attention when you are developing your home landscaping ideas: the corners and the doorway. Basically, the door is the focal point of the house and it is advisable to place short plantings on either side of it. For the corners, taller plants are excellent since they can funnel the viewer’s eye toward the doorway plants and the front door.

Trees are also great since they can serve as a frame for the house. They can focus the interest on the house making it the main feature of the property. Generally, you should plant trees with mature sizes similar to the scale of the house. Be careful not to plant trees that are taller than the house as they will only end up dwarfing the house itself. More so, planting shorter trees can make the house look taller than it actually is and probably give a sense of arrogance and forebodingness.

Select trees that can match the overall design of the house. A house with a steeply angled roof line and dormer windows normally call for pyramidal trees, like birch and spruces. For the low lines of a ranch type dwelling, trees that are horizontal or round formed, like maples and dogwoods, are great choices.

Aside from the plants and trees, the open lawn is also important since it can provide an excellent setting for the house. A lawn on the front yard with uncluttered flower beds, shrubs and ornaments can create the illusion of extra space. Take note that shrubs can appear floating and lost unless planted in cultivated beds or groups.

Starting a Front Yard Landscaping

The construction of beautiful front yard landscaping ideas begin with the design. You can begin by enrolling in a class about landscaping, reading books, or buying a computer program to assist you. This process is often very time-consuming and, if you can find it within your budget to hire a professional, you should opt for this unless you are particularly interested in learning the art of landscaping yourself.

If you hire a designer to do it for you, it is also important to do your part. Cut out photos from publications and show them to your designer; this will provide your designer the preference you want for the front yard.

Always remember that creativity can create a wonderful front yard landscape. Like clothing, home landscaping and garden designs go in and out of style. Many yards can be ready for improvement and renewal after years of growth. You should remember, however, that every element and feature must work together in order to make the front yard special and inviting.
